It's Not Easy Being Green

The secret isn't the leaves. It's the roots.

Have you ever wondered why some trees stay tall and green no matter what?

A storm blows through. The wind bends everything sideways. Branches whip around, leaves scatter across the yard, and yet somehow certain trees barely move.

Their branches sway, but the tree itself stays because its roots go deep.

Jeremiah says that’s what trusting God looks like.

This week, Jeremiah 17:7-8 has been sitting on my heart.

“Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8

The more I sit with Jeremiah 17, the more I realize it isn’t simply a beautiful picture of nature. It’s a picture of what holds us together when life feels like it’s coming apart.
